Cellphones use up power when they’re trying to access a weak network signal. If you leave your phone on in areas with little or no signal it can drain your battery, even if you don’t use it. Keeping the phone in a crowded area(purse, briefcase, desk drawer) is not a good idea. It can be hard for a phone to get a signal in those places.
